Product Overview

This double-sided Thangka pendant features Green Tara, the embodiment of enlightened compassion and swift action, together with Mahakala, one of the most important Dharma protectors in Tibetan Buddhism.

Entirely hand-painted on both sides with 18K gold and crafted in the Rebgong (Regong) artistic tradition, this pendant brings together gentleness and strength, compassion and protection. Encased in a traditional 18K gold Gau box with sapphire crystal on both sides, it is designed for personal devotion, travel, and long-term preservation.

Green Tara — Compassion, Wisdom & Vitality

Green Tara is revered as an emanation of Avalokiteshvara’s compassion and wisdom. As a female yidam, she is especially associated with:

  • Protection of women and children

  • Health, vitality, and emotional balance

  • Swift assistance in times of difficulty

Her green form symbolizes life force, renewal, and enlightened activity, and she is regarded as the principal figure among the Twenty-One Taras, widely venerated across all Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

Mahakala — Fierce Protection & Removal of Obstacles

Mahakala is one of the most important protector deities in Tibetan Buddhism. Originating from ancient Indian warrior deities and later fully integrated into Buddhist practice, Mahakala represents:

  • The destruction of ignorance, obstacles, and inner afflictions

  • The protection of the Dharma and sincere practitioners

  • Associations with wealth preservation, stability, and protection from misfortune

Mahakala is considered a wrathful manifestation of Avalokiteshvara himself, embodying fierce compassion—powerful, uncompromising, yet ultimately protective.

Among his many forms, the Six-Armed Mahakala is regarded as the most complete, typically depicted in deep blue with multiple ritual implements, symbolizing his all-encompassing protective power.

The Meaning of Their Union in Tibetan Buddhist Art

In Tibetan Buddhist art and practice, Green Tara and Mahakala frequently appear together within the same Thangka or sculptural arrangement. Their pairing expresses a core Buddhist principle:

  • Green Tara represents compassion, wisdom, and nurturing guidance

  • Mahakala represents protection, discipline, and the removal of obstacles

Together, they symbolize the harmonious unity of compassion and protection, wisdom and strength. In traditional compositions, protector deities such as Mahakala often appear surrounding or supporting the main deity, emphasizing that spiritual progress requires both compassionate intention and steadfast protection along the path.
