Before We Begin
To create a custom thangka properly, we first confirm a few key details. This helps ensure the artwork follows traditional iconography and matches your intended use.
1) Deity & Iconography
Tell us which Buddha, Bodhisattva, Protector, or lineage form you wish to commission. If you have a specific version, please mention it.
2) Painting Size
Share your preferred painting size and overall format for your altar or space. If you are unsure, we can recommend a suitable size.
3) Detail Level
The level of detail affects both timeline and cost. Let us know whether you prefer a simple, standard, or highly detailed composition.
4) Reference Image Review
If you provide a reference image, we will review it first to confirm feasibility and alignment with traditional thangka standards.
Pricing & Timeline
Because every thangka is hand-painted, pricing and timeline depend on the painting size, level of detail, and the complexity of the iconography. We confirm everything before the work begins.
Your quote is based on:
- Painting size (and overall format for your space/altar)
- Detail level (simple / standard / highly detailed)
- Composition complexity (figures, background, ornaments, etc.)
- Materials & finishing (traditional pigments and gold detailing)
Recommended lead time (please reserve early for larger sizes):
Standard Size
50–80 cm
Reserve about 2 months in advance.
Large Size
80 × 150 cm
Reserve about 3–5 months in advance.
Extra Large
Larger / complex
May require 6–12 months depending on detail.
Deposit & Approval
To keep the process clear and fair, commissions follow a simple milestone structure: confirm the details, begin with a deposit, approve the finished work, then ship securely.
1 Confirm & 50% Deposit
After we confirm the deity, painting size, detail level, and the quote, we begin the commission with a 50% deposit.
2 Creation & Progress Updates
The thangka is hand-painted according to tradition. We can provide progress photos at key stages when appropriate.
3 Final Approval & Shipment
When the work is completed, we share final photos for confirmation. After the remaining 50% balance is paid, we carefully pack and ship internationally.
Important Notes
A custom thangka is a traditional sacred artwork. To protect the integrity of the iconography and ensure a smooth commission, please review the notes below before submitting your request.
Work Begins After Confirmation
We begin only after the deity, painting size, detail level, and key requirements are confirmed. This ensures the thangka follows traditional standards from the start.
Feedback Is Welcome (Within the Plan)
During creation, you may share feedback based on the confirmed composition. Adjustments are limited to refining details within the agreed design.
No Major Design Changes Mid-Process
Once the painting begins, we cannot change the main iconography, deity form, or overall composition. This protects the integrity of sacred imagery and the artist’s workflow.
Deposit Policy
The deposit reserves the artist’s time and materials. If the commission is canceled or cannot be completed due to buyer-side changes, the deposit is non-refundable.
Craftsmanship & Dedication
A commissioned thangka is not only a painting — it is a traditional sacred artwork created with care, discipline, and respect for Himalayan Buddhist practice.
Our artists follow a traditional approach throughout the process, focusing on both iconographic accuracy and mindful execution.
- Focused daily work: the painting is created through steady, disciplined sessions.
- Respectful preparation: before painting, the artist approaches the work with a calm and reverent mindset.
- Traditional proportions: deities are drawn according to canonical iconography and measurement principles.
- Careful finishing: final inspection and packing are handled with the same respect as the creation.
Dedication / Aspiration (Read) +
May the merit of this commission support peace, clarity, and compassionate intention. May all beings be free from suffering and its causes, and may wisdom and kindness grow in the world.
If you would like a short dedication on the back (name, mantra, or aspiration), please mention it in your request.
