Product Overview

This 18K gold, double-sided, fully hand-painted Tibetan mini thangka pendant features Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) on the front and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) on the reverse.

Medicine Buddha, formally known as Bhaisajyaguru Vaidurya Prabha Tathagata, is revered in Buddhist tradition as the embodiment of compassion, clarity, and liberation from suffering. This pendant is painted in the Rebgong (Regong / Amdo) thangka tradition and sealed in an 18K gold gau box with sapphire crystal lens, designed for daily wear, travel, or personal devotional focus.

Rather than a medical object, this piece is best understood as a religious and cultural artwork, symbolizing inner healing, wisdom, and balance, as taught in Buddhist philosophy.

Front Image: Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru)

According to the Medicine Buddha Sutra (Bhaisajyaguru Vaidurya Prabha Purva Pranidhana Sutra), Medicine Buddha presides over the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli World and is known for his Twelve Great Vows, dedicated to relieving beings from suffering and ignorance.

Traditional Iconography

In this thangka, Medicine Buddha is depicted following classical Tibetan conventions:

  • Posture: Seated in full lotus on a lotus throne, representing stability and awakened awareness

  • Body Color: Deep blue, symbolizing the clarity and purity of lapis lazuli

  • Right Hand: Gesture of generosity and reassurance, holding Haritaki, the symbolic medicinal fruit

  • Left Hand: Meditative mudra, supporting a bowl that represents spiritual nourishment

In Buddhist iconography, Haritaki is not shown as a pharmaceutical substance, but as a symbol of wisdom that addresses suffering at its root—ignorance and imbalance of mind.

Reverse Image: Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)

The reverse side features Haritaki, known in Tibetan tradition as a sacred fruit associated with Medicine Buddha.

In Buddhist and Himalayan cultural symbolism, Haritaki represents:

  • Restoration of balance

  • Clarity and discernment

  • The principle of addressing causes rather than symptoms

  • Respect for natural wisdom traditions

While Haritaki has a long history in traditional herbal knowledge, its presence in this thangka should be understood symbolically and culturally, reflecting holistic awareness rather than medical instruction.

Meaning of the Double-Sided Design

Together, the two sides form a complete symbolic narrative:

  • Medicine Buddha (Front): compassion, clarity, liberation from suffering

  • Haritaki (Back): wisdom, balance, and mindful prevention

This pairing is traditionally appreciated by those who seek:

  • Emotional steadiness and peace of mind

  • Support for meditation and reflection

  • A symbolic reminder of balance between body, mind, and awareness
